TIFA FOUNDATION

ACCELERATING THE CONSOLIDATION OF DEMOCRACY

Democracy in Indonesia is still an ongoing process. For the past decade, the process of democratization in Indonesia has helped in the maturing of all elements of society with valuable lessons and experiences, where subsequent years will be a critical period for the country to prove that it can indeed develop into the third largest democratic country after India and the U.S. Years to come will be a test for all pro-democracy proponents to ensure that the process follows the desired direction.

For the 2008-2010 period, Tifa is focused on promoting the agenda to “accelerate and enhance the quality of democratic consolidation in Indonesia” where its implementation is interpreted into five key programs: Human Rights & Access to Justice, Citizenship & Equality, Civil Society & Democracy, Local Governance, and Media & Information. All five programs are directed toward speeding up the process of the consolidation of democracy by supporting pro-democracy agendas specifically within civil society in Indonesia.

Founded at the end of the year 2000, Tifa’s mission is to promote an open society in Indonesia which respects diversity and upholds the rule of law, justice and equality. An open society in Indonesia where the people, government and the private sector advance individual rights particularly the rights and opinions of women, the minority and other marginalized groups, support and nurture solidarity as well as good governance. In line with further developments in its mission, Tifa will continue to be keep abreast with and respond to changes that will impact on Indonesian society.

Let us link up with each other and work towards creating an open society in Indonesia!

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. The Conference was organized in response to the food crises of the early 1970s that primarily affected the Sahelian countries of Africa. The conference resolved that “an International Fund for Agricultural Development should be established immediately to finance agricultural development projects primarily for food production in the developing countries”. One of the most important insights emerging from the conference was that the causes of food insecurity and famine were not so much failures in food production, but structural problems relating to poverty and to the fact that the majority of the developing world’s poor populations were concentrated in rural areas.

IFAD’s mission is to enable poor rural people to overcome poverty.

IFAD is dedicated to eradicating rural poverty in developing countries. Seventy-five per cent of the world’s poorest people - 1.05 billion women, children and men - live in rural areas and depend on agriculture and related activities for their livelihoods.

Working with rural poor people, governments, donors, non-governmental organizations and many other partners, IFAD focuses on country-specific solutions, which can involve increasing rural poor peoples’ access to financial services, markets, technology, land and other natural resources.

IFAD’s Strategic Framework for 2007-2010

IFAD’s activities are guided by the Strategic Framework for IFAD 2007-2010: Enabling the rural poor to overcome poverty.

Goal

IFAD’s goal is to empower poor rural women and men in developing countries to achieve higher incomes and improved food security.

Objectives

IFAD will ensure that poor rural people have better access to, and the skills and organization they need to take advantage of:

* Natural resources, especially secure access to land and water, and improved natural resource management and conservation practices
* Improved agricultural technologies and effective production services
* A broad range of financial services
* Transparent and competitive markets for agricultural inputs and produce
* Opportunities for rural off-farm employment and enterprise development
* Local and national policy and programming processes

All of IFAD’s decisions - on regional, country and thematic strategies, poverty reduction strategies, policy dialogue and development partners - are made with these principles and objectives in mind. As reflected in the strategic framework, IFAD is committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the target to halve the proportion of hungry and extremely poor people by 2015.

Working in partnership to eradicate rural poverty

Through low-interest loans and grants, IFAD works with governments to develop and finance programmes and projects that enable rural poor people to overcome poverty themselves.

Since starting operations in 1978, IFAD has invested US$10.8 billion in 805 projects and programmes that have reached more than 340 million poor rural people.

Governments and other financing sources in recipient countries, including project participants, contributed US$15.3 billion, and multilateral, bilateral and other donors provided approximately another US$9.5 billion in cofinancing.

This represents a total investment of about US$24.8 billion, and means that for every dollar IFAD invested, it was able to mobilize almost two dollars in additional resources.

IFAD tackles poverty not only as a lender, but also as an advocate for rural poor people. Its multilateral base provides a natural global platform to discuss important policy issues that influence the lives of rural poor people, as well as to draw attention to the centrality of rural development to meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

IFAD membership

Membership in IFAD is open to any state that is a member of the United Nations or its specialized agencies or the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Governing Council is IFAD’s highest decision-making authority, with 165 Member States represented by a Governor and Alternate Governor and any other designated advisers. The Council meets annually. The Executive Board, responsible for overseeing the general operations of IFAD and approving loans and grants, is composed of 18 members and 18 alternate members. The President, who serves for a four-year term (renewable once), is IFAD’s chief executive officer and chair of the Executive Board.

The current President of IFAD is Mr Kanayo Nwanze, who was elected for a four-year term in 2009.

Students learn business in virtual contest

Erwida Maulia, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Sixteen-year old Jaya Sakti, an 11th grader from the SMK 26 Jakarta vocational school, said his dream was to one day run a boardinghouse business.

Over the weekend, Jaya was able to live out this dream, taking part in the two-day SimBiz 2009 contest, a software-based entrepreneurial business competition in Jakarta offering students the chance to learn about managing a company.

Around 150 high school and 100 university students from across the country entered competitions with prizes worth Rp 17 million (US$1,550) in total.

Throughout the day, students such as Jaya learned how different business decisions affected companies by monitoring the progress of a virtual enterprise.

“I’ve learned that increasing the selling price of a product can impact the product’s sales. If we want to raise prices, we have to also increase market spending,” he said.

His friend, Muhamad Iqbal Saifudin, said he was taught how to use software to make business planning easier to draft.

The two students were finalists in the business simulation contest for high-school students.

The competition, organized jointly by Bina Nusantara (Binus) University’s International program and software company Prestasi Junior Indonesia (affiliated with software developer Junior Achievement Worldwide) required participating students to develop their businesses using the simulation software JA Titan.

The students were divided into teams of two, in which each group was given between 70 and 120 minutes to act as executives of a manufacturing firm. Then, entrusted with the responsibility of a company head, they had to make decisions based on six business concepts: the price of products, amount of goods produced, marketing costs, research and development costs and investment costs.

Binus University International’s student dean Dominique Razafindrambini said during the opening ceremony SimBiz 2009 aimed to help students improve their business skills and knowledge, as well as sharpen their skills.

Member of Prestasi Junior Indonesia’s national board and former environment minister Sarwono Kusumaatmadja said Indonesia needed to encourage more of its citizens to be business-minded, and that entrepreneurial skills should be developed early on.

The contest, adopted from international business simulation competition The Hewlett Packard Global Business Challenge, was sponsored by US-based giant mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia and technology consultant firm Accenture.

“We’re happy that students from various regions, including Greater Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and East Kalimantan, enthusiastically took part in this competition, which serves as an education tool about the importance of business decisions,” said Freeport spokesman Mindo Pangaribuan.

The competition received praise for boosting students’ awareness about owning a businesses, particularly after complaints were directed at schools for only encouraging students to work with private firms or state offices.
